Soprano Carol Smith and pianist Jonathan Howe will present a Collaborative Recital on Sunday, August 10, at 2 p.m. at the Southampton Cultural Center.
The program will include vocal and piano works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Paderewski, Carpenter and Bortkiewicz. Smith will open the performance with selections including “O Zittre Nicht” from “Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)” and “Wie Unglücklich bin ich nit,” both by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She will also perform Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise,” Opus 34, No. 14.
Following intermission, Howe will take the stage with solo piano works including “Diversions” by John Alden Carpenter, Paderewski’s “Nocturne in B-flat major,” Rachmaninoff’s “Etude-Tableau in D Minor,” and four movements from Serge Bortkiewicz’s “From Andersen’s Fairy Tales.”
Carol Adrianne Smith is a native of Freetown neighborhood of East Hampton. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in integrative biology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in bioenvironmental science from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Smith minored in music and trained privately under the late coloratura soprano Marianne Weltmann and Mady Mesplé of Paris. She is dedicated to the performance of classical music.
Jonathan Howe grew up in Armonk, New York, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in music from Princeton University, a Master of Arts in music education from Queens College/CUNY, and an administrative certification from LIU Post. He teaches music in the East Hampton School District and studies piano with Teresa Dybvig. Howe also plays saxophone with the Sag Harbor Community Band and is an accomplished bridge player.
A reception will follow the performance in the art gallery. Tickets are $15; proceeds will support efforts to preserve the rich history of Freetown in East Hampton.
